| Preservation
is not just an empty concept to Bob and Lois Hostkoetter; it is efforts
made to save a farm full of log buildings from oblivion by means of deep-seated
appreciation of history and a determination to maintain a link with German-American
roots. At Luxenhaus Farm, the Hostkoetters have preserved not only
old log structures, but the life skills and folkways of the nineteenth
century German settlers in Missouri.
Just thirty three years ago, Luxenhaus Farm was a rocky wooded hillside, typical of the Warren County, Missouri countryside in the mid-1800's. Nineteen log buildings, many primitive structures and a "Covered Bridge" now dot the acreage, thanks to the foresight of the Bob Hostkoetter family. In 1970, the former St. Louis professional photographer saw many old buildings disappearing from the landscape, along with their rich heritage. Of country roots, Hostkoetter decided to somehow preserve their history. First was the "Eric Sloane" Covered Bridge, constructed of siding, circa 1818, the Louisiana Purchase era. The six room log home was the second to be reconstructed, built originally in 1830 in Perryville, Missouri by German immigrant Andrew Huber. Then followed the eighteen Missouri log structures from Gasconade, St. Charles, St. Louis and Warren Counties — all built between 1800 and 1860. These buildings became "Luxenhaus Farm", platt Deutsch for "log house farm". The farm has been featured in numerous national magazines, publications and films. |

The Hostkoetters' donate the farm and equipment used for Deutsch Country Days, sharing Missouri's history with guests from around the globe. You're invited to relive the past as you cross the "Eric Sloane" covered bridge (inspired by artist and Americana author Eric Sloane). See and hear the legacy of the Missouri Germans, who traveled from the old country in response to the 1828 glowing written reports of Gottfried Duden. Develop a renewed appreciation for the life skills of our German ancestors. "Komm, freuet euch mit uns" — Come, enjoy yourself with us — here you are most welcome! |
